CHAPTER 7

An obnoxious, shrill sound yanked me out of a dream.

I blinked a few times, swimming out from under the shroud of sleep, but before I could speak, Derek said exactly what I was thinking.

“What the fuck?” He pushed himself up and reached for the nightstand. Cell phone in hand, he dropped back onto the bed. He glared at the screen, blinking a few times, then groaned. “Shit. It’s one of my business partners. I’d better take it.”

“Go right ahead.”

He put the phone to his ear. “Windsor,” he said with sleepiness that may or may not have been exaggerated. “No, no, it’s okay, I’m awake. What’s up?” He scowled, his brow furrowing and eyes losing focus as the person on the other end spoke. “So write them up. They’ve been warned, it’s not like—” He rubbed his eyes, his jaw clenching as the other person went on. Finally, he released a sharp sigh. “Okay, okay. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

My heart sank.

Cursing under his breath, Derek set the phone on the nightstand. “Looks like I need to go into the office today.”

I forced a playful grin. “Time to go bust some heads together?”

“Pretty much.” He rolled his eyes. “Such is the life of the boss. Apparently a client wants us on a conference call, too, so I’ll kill two birds with one stone.” He propped himself up on his elbow and kissed me. “You’re welcome to hang out here, but if you want to go out, the Jeep’s all yours.”

I stared at him. “I don’t have the faintest clue where anything is, though.”

“It has GPS, and there’s a map in the glove box that has all sorts of places marked. If you get completely lost, set the GPS for ‘home’ and it’ll bring you right back here.” He paused. “Oh, and you’ll need a key card. Don’t let me leave without giving you one.”

“You trust me with your Jeep?”

He grinned. “Well, you won’t get very far if you try to steal it. It’s a small island.”

“I suppose I won’t, will I?”

“You’re welcome to try, though,” he said with a shrug. “I mean, if you can pull it off, I might as well let you keep it for your trouble.”

“Sounds like a challenge. I might have to give it a try.”

He snickered. “Good luck with that.” He kissed me, drawing it out for a moment. “I do not want to go in today. I’d rather stay with you. But I’ll make it up to you tonight, I promise.”

“I’m going to hold you to that, just so you know.” I wrapped my arms around him. “How soon do you have to leave?”

Trailing his fingertips down my side, he whispered, “I’m the boss. If I’m late, they can suck my cock.”

“Or, you can be late because I did suck your cock.”

“Have I mentioned lately that I love the way you think?”

It was almost ten when we finally got out of bed. Rather, when we finally got out of bed and stayed that way.
